About Aboriginal water in NSW

Healthy waterways are critical to the culture and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities across NSW. Water provides food, kinship, connection, recreation, stories, songlines and healing.

The department is working to secure a future where water for Aboriginal people is embedded in water planning and management in NSW to improve access to, and ownership of, water for cultural, spiritual, social, environmental and economic benefit to Aboriginal communities.

Aboriginal commercial licences

There are no longer provisions in any water sharing plans for an Aboriginal commercial special purpose access licence to be granted.

These provisions were in some of the earlier water sharing plans which have been re-made.

Instead, there are provisions for the granting of Aboriginal community development special purpose access licences in several inland groundwater sources and coastal unregulated river water and groundwater sources.
